Thank you to all our users! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AIMemories?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AIMemories<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b6cjR2tSuU\">https:\/\/t.co\/b6cjR2tSuU<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/V09Fl7EPMx\">pic.twitter.com\/V09Fl7EPMx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AIM (@aim) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aim\/status\/916290747850264577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 6, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Michael Albers, VP of Communications Product at Oath \u2014 the Verizon subsidiary which owns both AOL and Yahoo \u2014 said in a Tumblr post that he understands how important AIM was to many people:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You likely remember the CD, your first screenname, your carefully curated away messages, and how you organized your buddy lists. Right now you might be reminiscing about how you had to compete for time on the home computer in order to chat with friends outside of school \u2026 In the late 1990\u2019s, the world had never seen anything like it. And it captivated all of us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure how many people will mourn AIM\u2019s loss on a practical level \u2014 I haven\u2019t even heard of anyone using it in the last few years, which isn\u2019t surprising given how many more sophisticated alternatives are available. That\u2019s not a dig at the company, for the record: I actually still have my old AOL email address (it was my first, and I\u2019m sentimental).<\/p>\n<p>Whatever its value, or lack thereof, on a modern internet, it\u2019ll be sad to see a piece of Internet history go after 20 years.
