{"id":359690,"date":"2017-10-07T11:00:30","date_gmt":"2017-10-07T11:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=359690"},"modified":"2017-10-07T11:00:30","modified_gmt":"2017-10-07T11:00:30","slug":"5-trucks-loaded-with-illegal-lumber-impounded-in-ba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/5-trucks-loaded-with-illegal-lumber-impounded-in-ba\/","title":{"rendered":"5 trucks loaded with illegal lumber impounded in BA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The District Security Committee (DISEC) of the Asutifi North led by the District Chief Executive, Anthony Adjei Mensah, has impounded five (5) Kia trucks loaded with illegal lumber.<\/p>\n<p>The illegal lumber, which\u00a0were\u00a0sourced from the Goamu and Ntotroso areas, according to Anthony Adjei, may be distributed for use by uncompleted educational facilities and self-help projects in the district.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-359736\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Illegal-lumber-1.jpg\" alt=\"illegal-lumber-1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anthony Agyei, who spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> after effecting the arrest, bemoaned the activities of illegal loggers, saying they were\u00a0fast depleting the forest and vegetative cover of the Goamu and Ntotroso areas of the district.<\/p>\n<p>He thus pledged to institute measures to protect the area&#8217;s forest reserves to ensure the President&#8217;s vision of protecting the country\u2019s vegetative cover is realized.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-359735\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Illegal-lumber-5.jpg\" alt=\"illegal-lumber-5\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Agyei said due to the bad roads and inefficient communication service in the remote areas of the district, the illegal loggers had resorted to engaging in their illegal act at night, a situation he lamented was making it difficult to\u00a0arrest them.<\/p>\n<p>The District Commander of Police, DSP Teddy Damptey Brown, warned that his outfit will prosecute any individual or group of persons who\u00a0fell trees\u00a0in the forest without authorization from the Forestry Commission.<\/p>\n<p>He said the arrest was based on a tip off, and therefore appealed to residents of affected areas to collaborate with police by providing them with useful information.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly member for the Jericho electoral area who doubles as the New Patriotic Party\u2019s (NPP) Constituency Chairman for the Asutifi North, and facilitated the arrest, commended community members for\u00a0providing the information leading to the arrest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-359733\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Illegal-lumber-2.jpg\" alt=\"illegal-lumber-2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said illegal lumbering was greatly depleting forest reserves in the Goamu area, and pledged not to sit unconcerned for some greedy individuals to put the lives of residents of the area in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Illegal lumbering has assumed an alarming level in the region&#8217;s forest reserves lately, especially in the Kintampo North, Asutifi North, Tano North and South, and Tain districts.<\/p>\n<p>The practice, coupled with illegal mining in the area, is greatly destroying farmlands and polluting water bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Early this week, a galamsey pit in the area caved in, leaving one dead, with several others believed to have been trapped.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Mashoud Kombat\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The District Security Committee (DISEC) of the Asutifi North led by the District Chief Executive, Anthony Adjei Mensah, has impounded five (5) Kia trucks loaded with illegal lumber.
