{"id":359508,"date":"2017-10-06T12:58:41","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T12:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=359508"},"modified":"2017-10-06T12:58:41","modified_gmt":"2017-10-06T12:58:41","slug":"uds-extols-planting-for-food-and-jobs-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/10\/uds-extols-planting-for-food-and-jobs-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"UDS extols planting for food and jobs programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Principal of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor George Nyarko has commended government for reintroducing the planting for food and jobs programme.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the need for government to tap into the expertise of members of the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists (GhIH), to ensure the programme\u2019s successful implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Professor George Nyarko was addressing the 7th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists (GhIH) on the theme, &#8220;Planting for food and jobs, the role of Horticulture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Professor Nyarko stated that, \u201c(GhIH will support the government on any matters related to horticulture as far as the campaign is concerned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-359512 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/uds-team-3.jpg\" alt=\"uds-team-3\" width=\"768\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to him, the nation\u2019s tertiary institutions offering agriculture courses are ill-equipped.<\/p>\n<p>This situation, he bemoaned is hampering the practical orientation aspects of the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Right now, Nyankpala Faculty of Agriculture has about 100 acres of soya beans and maize, and we&#8217;re not able to plant more simply because of lack of equipment and machinery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want planters, ploughing machines, processing machines and other things. I am appealing to the government under the campaign to resource the faculties of agric universities in Ghana.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-359510\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/uds-team-2.jpg\" alt=\"uds-team-2\" width=\"780\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Northern Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, William Boakye Acheampong, said the planting for food and jobs programme will create 750,000 jobs across the commodity value chain.<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged the Ghana Institute of Horticulturists to give government its expert advice on the implementation of the programme.<\/p>\n<p>William Boakye Acheampong anticipated that, by the end of the 2017 cropping season, maize production might increase by 30%, rice 49%, soya beans 25% and sorghum 28%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Abdul Karim Naatogmah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Principal of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Professor George Nyarko has commended government for reintroducing the planting for food and jobs programme.
