Management of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), has scheduled its 11th Congregation, which was postponed indefinitely due to the absence of a school governing council to Friday 6th October.

The 11th congregation, which was earlier slated to take place on September 22nd under the Ministry of Education’s National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), was postponed after a new council was formed some days to the planned date.

[contextly_sidebar id=”oY5tguznxXWS05IgpHfnKBtcYX7azHCw”]The newly constituted governing council, which was inaugurated by the Ministry of Education, replaces the erstwhile council which exhausted its four years term.

The Registrar of the Institute, Mr. Perry Ofosu, affirmed that with the approval of the governing council, the 11th Congregation is set to come off come Friday October 6th.

According to him, “because the Council was inaugurated very close to the time, it was not prudent to have the congregation” adding that, it is the “Council’s responsibility to confer the degrees on the qualified students; and it is the Chairman of Council who does that on behalf of Council.”

“The newly constituted Council would have to be informed on everything that is being done for them to abreast themselves, and therefore the decision was made that it should be postponed. So academic board later on proposed that the congregation should take place on the 6th of October and Council approved it; and once the Governing Council has approved, then it means it will take place of the 6th” he explained.

“When we organized the graduate congregation, we sought permission from NCTE, so the NCTE Executive Secretary stood in as a stand in Chairman, as the regulator; and that one was because there was no council in place. But now that a council is in place, council would have to take the responsibility of conferring [the degrees],” he added.
