{"id":356783,"date":"2017-09-25T16:36:25","date_gmt":"2017-09-25T16:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=356783"},"modified":"2017-11-10T11:11:26","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T11:11:26","slug":"akufo-addo-to-meet-ivorian-diplomats-over-itlos-judgment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/akufo-addo-to-meet-ivorian-diplomats-over-itlos-judgment\/","title":{"rendered":"Akufo-Addo to meet Ivorian diplomats over ITLOS judgment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Akufo-Addo would later this week meet with some diplomats from C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire over Saturday\u2019s landmark judgment by the <a href=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/23\/ghana-wins-maritime-dispute-case-against-ivory-coast\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>(ITLOS) on the two countries&#8217; maritime dispute.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting will\u00a0see the two parties come up with a plan on how to actualize the judgment of the court.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;DKAhuj7b7jLWpfHhqv8dNxhPqdRPIZM8&#8243;]The Minister for Information, Mustapha Hamid, in an interview with journalists in Accra, said the President will speak formally on the court\u2019s judgment at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this coming week, the Ivorian President will send envoys to Ghana and together the two governments will tell the world what it is they are willing to do in respect to this judgment. For now, the President will hold his peace until that engagement with the Ivorian envoys, and then we can let the Ghanaian people know what the formal positions of the two governments are with regards to the ITLOS government,&#8221; Mustapha Hamid said.<\/p>\n<p>The Special Chamber of ITLOS in a unanimous decision on Saturday September 23, 2017, ruled that there has not been any violation on the part of Ghana on C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s maritime boundary.<\/p>\n<p>It rejected C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s argument that Ghana\u2019s coastal lines were unstable, noting that\u00a0Ghana has\u00a0not\u00a0violated C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s sovereign rights with its oil exploration in the disputed basin.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Boualem Bouguetaia, President of the Special Chamber in reading the judgment, accepted Ghana\u2019s argument\u00a0of adoption of the equidistance method of delineation of the maritime boundary.<\/p>\n<p>In consideration of the new boundary, the Chamber determined that it starts from boundary 55 -200 nautical miles away, a position much closer to what Ghana was arguing for.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say Ghana would now have to wait to see how the final map looks, once the coordinates are plotted in the sea using boundary pillar BP 55+ on a common land boundary, as a starting point for drawing the new equidistance line.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Ghana took the case to ITLOS to dispel claims it has encroached Cote d\u2019Ivoire\u2019s marine borders as part of oil exploration activities at Cape Three Points, off the shores of the Western Region.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana\u2019s defense held that Cote d\u2019Ivoire\u00a0was barred from demanding ownership to the disputed area they\u00a0had acknowledged that Ghana owned without any qualms in the decades leading up to the oil discovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cote D\u2019lvoire, Ghana accept ITLOS judgement on maritime dispute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Agents who represented Ghana and Cote D\u2019lvoire, Gloria Akuffo and Adama Toungara, have already said\u00a0they accept the \u00a0judgement on the case.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/23\/cote-dlvoire-ghana-accept-itlos-judgement-on-maritime-dispute\/\">joint statement <\/a><\/strong><\/span>released hours after the Chamber\u2019s judgement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Jonas Nyabor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Akufo-Addo would later this week meet with some diplomats from C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire over Saturday\u2019s landmark judgment by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the two countries&#8217; maritime dispute.
