<\/p>\nThe Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), will soon embark on a nationwide exercise to register new members.<\/p>\n
This is after the Trade Union Congress (TUC) today [Friday], issued\u00a0a unionized\u00a0certificate to the GJA, 60 years after the association was formed.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a ceremony to receive the certificate, the GJA President, Affail\u00a0Money, said the Association would use its new bargaining power to improve the working conditions of journalists, and not to attack employers.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnionized\u00a0employees\u00a0make an average of 30 percent more pay than\u00a0non-unionized\u00a0workers. 92 percent of unionized workers have\u00a0health-related\u00a0coverage. Union workers also enjoy\u00a0guaranteed\u00a0pensions. These facts and\u00a0much\u00a0more contrast sharply with the general conditions of media workers in Ghana,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n
Some\u00a0workers in media are known to be\u00a0poorly\u00a0paid, as Mr. Money pointed\u00a0out.<\/p>\n
Workers of the New Times Corporation, producers\u00a0of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper, recently demonstrated against their management for better conditions of service.<\/p>\n
However, Mr. Money said this \u201cpitiable, ignoble and horrible narrative will be consigned to the dustbin of history as the\u00a0GJA\u00a0has been legally\u00a0empowered\u00a0to fight for the industrial and professional rights of media workers in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n
In this light, the\u00a0GJA\u00a0will be\u00a0rolling out\u00a0\u201can immediate, massive and\u00a0expansive\u00a0drive to register all\u00a0non-union\u00a0media workers in Ghana, especially those in the private sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAll media workers must maximize this\u00a0unique\u00a0window of opportunity to register. All\u00a0GJA\u00a0regional\u00a0executives\u00a0must facilitate this bold venture,\u201d Mr. Money added.<\/p>\n
