{"id":352931,"date":"2017-09-13T06:00:57","date_gmt":"2017-09-13T06:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=352931"},"modified":"2017-11-10T11:25:05","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T11:25:05","slug":"our-protest-was-peaceful-small-scale-miners-challenge-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/our-protest-was-peaceful-small-scale-miners-challenge-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Our protest was peaceful &#8211; Small scale miners challenge police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/09\/12\/kumasi-10-arrested-in-protest-over-mining-ban\/\">the arrests<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and firing of tear gas during a protest by members of the Small-scale Miners Association in Kumasi, the association maintains that the\u00a0protest was within the confines of the law.<\/p>\n<p>Police had said the protesters breached the public order act as\u00a0some of them were seen to be carrying &#8220;offensive implements.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;37T9ROe30u2BFP5iqysdPFHrI06Dl7hT&#8221;]But speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, a spokesperson for the small-scale miners, Francis Opoku, said the claim that there was some breach is quite unfortunate.<\/p>\n<p>He said to the best of his knowledge, the protesting small-scale miners conducted themselves in &#8220;a perfect manner to the admiration of many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Opoku explained further that, protest technically did not come on as planned because, at the last minute, they were told by the demonstration could not come on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were confined\u00a0to a place, according to the information we gathered at the last minute. We were told, according to an order from above that we could not embark on the intended demonstration,\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, &#8220;I will tell you that none of our people were wielding anything deemed harmful,&#8221; Mr. Opoku reiterated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-352803\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Police-demonstrators-small-scale-miners-protests-2.jpg\" alt=\"police-demonstrators-small-scale-miners-protests-2\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Protest was still successful<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite being constrained, Mr. Opoku described the small-scale miners&#8217; protest as \u201cthe most successful intended demonstration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were able to communicate our issues and grievances to the people. What is the use of the demonstration; for the people to hear what we want to say and we have been able to communicate our information.
