The Upper East Regional Coordinating Council (UERCC) has refuted claims that the Deputy Regional Minister, Daniel Syme sped off after knocking down two persons on a motor bike on Thursday.

A rejoinder from the UERCC clarified that the Minister was unable to immediately turn around to attend to the victims because the incident occurred on a double carriage way.

The family of the victims are accusing Mr. Syme of failing to take responsibility for the accident and for failing to report himself to the Police.

They are also accusing the Police of refusing to arrest the Deputy Minister after the matter was reported.

But the UERCC council say contrary to reports, Mr. Syme reported the accident to the Police and investigations are underway.

REJOINDER: HIT-AND-RUN MINISTER KNOCKS TWO WITH VEHICLE

The Hon. Deputy Regional Minister will like to sympathise with the bereaved family for their loss. However, the Hon. Deputy Regional Minister’s office wishes to defuse the publication that he is a hit-and –run Minister.

The Joy News correspondent who published the story did not even interview the Deputy Minister to get his side of the story.

According to the Minister, the incident which occurred at a double carriage way prevented him from turning immediately back to the accident scene. As such, he had to move a further distance to a place where there is a U-turn to enable him drive back to the accident scene. We will like to state categorically clear that it was not his intention to run away as reported by the said correspondent.

Secondly, the Deputy Minister reported the matter to the Regional MTTU when the incident occurred so that the Police could come and conduct further investigations.

When the P.R.O of the UERCC visited the MTTU office, to get their side of the story, he was informed that, actually the Deputy Minister reported the incident immediately it occurred to the Police and so it was not his intention to hit-and-run away.

The MTTU boss also refuted the allegation that, the Deputy Minister was drunk when the incident occurred. The MTTU boss however said investigations were still ongoing and when that is completed the necessary steps will be taken.
