{"id":346479,"date":"2017-08-20T15:14:05","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:14:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=346479"},"modified":"2017-08-20T15:14:05","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T15:14:05","slug":"togo-security-forces-clamp-down-on-anti-gnassingbe-protestors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/08\/togo-security-forces-clamp-down-on-anti-gnassingbe-protestors\/","title":{"rendered":"Togo: Security forces clamp down on anti-Gnassingbe protestors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Togo\u2019s Security forces are still trying to quell anti-Gnassingbe protests that erupted in the capital Lome, Saturday, with parallel demonstrations in Sokode in Togo, and Ghana\u2019s capital Accra.<\/p>\n<p>So far two protesters have been reported killed and 13 others wounded after the security forces opened fire to break up demonstrations against the ruling Gnassingbe family dynasty.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrators are demanding the country\u2019s return to its 1992 Constitution which allowed multi-party democracy with a limited Presidential term of office; as many of them sang and chanted \u201c50 years is too long\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also accuse the President of superintending over corruption in the country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113831\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-113831\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Faure-Essozimna-Gnassingbe.jpg\" alt=\"President Faure Gnassingb\u00e9\" width=\"630\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Faure-Essozimna-Gnassingbe.jpg 630w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Faure-Essozimna-Gnassingbe-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Faure Gnassingb\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>President Faure Gnassingbe has been in power since 2005 when his father, Eyadema Gnassingbe, died. His father had ruled the country for 38 years.<\/p>\n<p>But the demonstrators say they are demanding \u201cgood elections with real results\u201d, according to Civil Society member and Coordinator of the National Platform for Social Universities, Prof. David Dosseh.<\/p>\n<p>Though the demonstrations were started by the main opposition PNP, CAP 2015, a coalition of five smaller opposition parties, and another coalition of six other smaller opposition parties, have both expressed support for the demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe military is said to have been deployed with many\u00a0checkpoints\u00a0erected following this support in fears that the demonstration may escalate in the coming hours\u201d, Prof Dosseh said.<\/p>\n<p>President Faure Gnassingbe is however yet to speak on the demonstrations and the killings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Sixtus Dong Ullo\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Togo\u2019s Security forces are still trying to quell anti-Gnassingbe protests that erupted in the capital Lome, Saturday, with parallel demonstrations in Sokode in Togo, and Ghana\u2019s capital Accra.
