<\/p>\nThe Ghana Science Association has added its voice to the fight against illegal mining in the country.<\/p>\n
The association is of the view that the situation on the menace of galamsey is problematic it is ready to explore scientific and technological methods to make small mining more environmentally friendly and less hazardous.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the 30th Biennial conference held in Koforidua on the theme ” The galamsey Menace: The Role of Science , Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development”, Dr. Mrs Esther Gyedu Akoto, the president of the Ghana Science Association, explained that the objective of conference is for stakeholders to exchange ideas to arrive at practical solutions for the sustainable management of small scale mining.<\/p>\n

The Eastern Regional Minister Hon. Eric Kwakye Darfour on his part stated that the Eastern Region has suffered immensely from the activities of galamsey operations which has caused destruction and pollution to farmlands and water bodies and has resulted in untold hardships to residents in the Region.<\/p>\n
The Eastern Regional Minister pleaded with the Ghana Science Association to come out with scientific strategies to help in water purification in the face of massive pollution of water bodies in the country.”<\/p>\n

“My region has been bedeviled with activities of galamsey operators, water bodies which was source of water for millions of people in the region has been ridiculously polluted, farmlands have also been destroyed and farmers are now poor. Am counting on your scientific knowledge and expertise to come out with resolutions and measures we can use to treat all these polluted water bodies because we are afraid of the water we are drinking now.”<\/p>\n
Professor Frimpong Boateng, the Minister of Environment Science, Technology, and Innovation, delivering the keynote address expressed worry about the menace of galamsey operations in the country.Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng who also happens to be the chairman<\/p>\n
Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng who also happens to be the chairman for the inter-ministerial committee established by the president to fight illegality enumerated a number of areas his committee is working on.<\/p>\n
“We are fighting all illegality which are committed by both small scale and large scale miners because there are some large scale mining companies who are not doing what is expected of them. It is illegal to mine along the river banks, it is illegal to divert the course of any river, it’s also illegal to mine in forest reserves, it’s illegal to degrade the land, it’s illegal for foreigners to engage in small scale mining and we are going to fight all these legalities.”<\/p>\n

Creation of mining districts<\/strong><\/p>\n He added that District mining committees will be activated headed by the District chief executives and it will serve as a performances indicator to assess DCE’s.<\/p>\n “The then district mining committees which previously used to exit Will be activated and this will be chaired by the District chief executive, other members of the security agencies, traditional leaders, and assembly members will all be part of the committee.
