{"id":339077,"date":"2017-07-25T08:45:15","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T08:45:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=339077"},"modified":"2017-07-25T08:45:15","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T08:45:15","slug":"govt-shoots-down-friendship-ties-with-imf-after-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/govt-shoots-down-friendship-ties-with-imf-after-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt shoots down \u2018friendship\u2019 ties with IMF after 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government has insisted it will not subscribe unto the Policy Sector Initiative (PSI) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) after the deal expires in December 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The NPP argues that the fund\u2019s intervention has least improved the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper has suggested that\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citibusinessnews.com\/index.php\/2017\/07\/24\/article-exiting-the-imf-programme-consider-a-psi-instead\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ghana signs onto the PSI<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0to benefit from financial advice and support without a borrowing arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Mr. Terkper, the move is necessary due to the bright economic prospects and the need to maintain fiscal discipline.<\/p>\n<p>But commenting on the suggestions, the Chairman of Parliament\u2019s Finance Committee, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah maintained that the NPP government will not yield to such suggestions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter three years or three years eight months, come December 2018, why shouldn\u2019t we exit the program? We entered into the three year program for all intent and purposes, we will extend it to December 2018 as it has been clarified by the President. After 2018, why should we still be engaged in any form of association with the IMF?\u201d he told\u00a0<strong>Citi Business News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Assibey Yeboah, an Economist by profession further justified that his party has the necessary mechanisms to foster fiscal discipline and achieve economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Mr. Terkper saying that the NPP doesn\u2019t have the credibility to be fiscally responsible?
