{"id":333901,"date":"2017-07-04T15:19:49","date_gmt":"2017-07-04T15:19:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=333901"},"modified":"2017-07-04T15:19:49","modified_gmt":"2017-07-04T15:19:49","slug":"i-wasnt-aware-of-galamsey-activities-prestea-dce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/i-wasnt-aware-of-galamsey-activities-prestea-dce\/","title":{"rendered":"I wasn&#8217;t aware of Galamsey activities &#8211; Prestea DCE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Prestea-Huni Valley in the Western Region,\u00a0Mozart Kwaku Owu, has said the presence of illegal miners in the area came as a surprise to him.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in the aftermath of the <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/03\/14-feared-dead-in-galamsey-pit-at-prestea\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>death of about 14 persons<\/strong><\/span><\/a> when a pit they were mining in collapsed on Monday, Mr. Owu stated that, the area where the incident happened, had been surveyed\u00a0two weeks ago as part of a crackdown against illegal miners.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;MofiGTb2196WwOEEn3EbBxyDLJeG2Nmd&#8221;]According to him, there was no indication that there had been any galamsey activity in the vicinity prior to the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were never aware of it, I\u2019m even surprised there was something like that. We had an exercise just two weeks ago on these illegal mining issues,&#8221; he told <strong>Citi News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we combed the site and so I\u2019m surprised about that place. It\u2019s a very critical issue and it\u2019s unfortunate this happened. But everything is under control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_333765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-333765\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/81344552_gettyimages_84157163.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-300525\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/81344552_gettyimages_84157163.jpg\" alt=\"File photo\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-333765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>&#8216;DISEC in control&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following the deaths\u00a0of the miners, the police in the Western Region have declared the <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/07\/04\/police-declare-owners-of-collapsed-galamsey-pit-wanted\/\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>owners of the pit wanted<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>17 people were believed to have been trapped in the pit, while five others, who managed to escape unhurt, are assisting the Police with investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.\u00a0Owu insisted that, despite not being aware of the activities, the District Security Committee had taken control of the matter and were proceeding with their investigations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ve instructed my District Coordinating Director as well as the District Police Commander to take charge of investigations. The District Coordinating Director, the Divisional Police Commander, the District Police Commander, the District BNI Commander are there.
