The Police in the Northern Region are hunting for some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Walewale in the Northern Region, who allegedly destroyed some properties of the party.

The angry youth invaded the offices of the party to protest against the nomination of Abu Ahmadou as the new District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area.

[contextly_sidebar id=”kRHMitIHSwLKYd8Tc2crw43UcsYaNLDg”]The previous nominee, Saaka Sayuti, was rejected three times by the assembly.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Tanko, said investigations have already begun to arrest the suspects.

“The incident at Walewale happened in the night around 9:00pm, and the police were informed. By the time the Police got there, they had vandalized the party office, and also Bawumia’s youth centre and had left. So the police did not meet the trouble makers on the ground. It is currently very difficult to identify exactly those who were involved in this particular disturbance, but investigations are underway to establish the perpetrators so that they will be arrested and prosecuted,” he added.

When asked how the police will discharge its duties since the case was a political one, ASP Tanko said they will continue to investigate the case regardless.

“We were not restricted in anyway by the political undertones associated with this kind of thing. We are not politicians, we look at the criminality of the act and we proceed according to what the law says,” he added.

Bugri Naabu appeals to rampaging NPP youth

The Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, had earlier cautioned the youth in the region to desist from such violent protests over the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive nominees.

He asked the rampaging youth to exercise maximum restraint by respecting the President’s decision and advised all aggrieved party supporters to use the appropriate party structures to settle their grievances with party leadership and the appointing authority.

A similar protest led to a political deadlock between some NPP supporters and the Savelugu/Nantong Municipal Chief Executive which was recently resolved by a Presidential mediation team.
