President Nana Akufo Addo will pay a three day official state visit to Zambia from the 26th to 29th\u00a0of June, 2017.\u00a0 The visit is upon the invitation of the Zambian President, Edgar Lungu.<\/p>\n
President Edgar Chagwa Lungu\u00a0has been in power since January 2015. Under former President\u00a0Michael Sata, Lungu served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Defense.<\/p>\n
Following Sata’s death in October 2014, Edgar Lungu was adopted as the candidate of the ruling Patriotic Front for the January 2015 presidential by-election, which was to determine who would serve out the remainder of Sata’s term<\/p>\n
In the election, he narrowly defeated opposition candidate\u00a0Hakainde Hichilema\u00a0and took office on 25 January 2015.<\/p>\n
President Edgar Lungu\u2019s\u00a0election was disputed in court by the then opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema, but the court dismissed the case.<\/p>\n
President Akufo Addo\u2019s visit comes on the back of reports that a number of political opponents of the Zambian leader are languishing in jail.<\/p>\n
Prominent among them are Obvious Mwaliteta and Elisha Matambo from the opposition United Party for National Development who have been incarcerated supposedly over post-election violence and armed robbery.<\/p>\n
