{"id":327524,"date":"2017-06-12T05:55:01","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T05:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=327524"},"modified":"2017-06-12T05:55:01","modified_gmt":"2017-06-12T05:55:01","slug":"over-1500-displaced-by-tidal-waves-at-blekusu-in-ketu-south","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/06\/over-1500-displaced-by-tidal-waves-at-blekusu-in-ketu-south\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 1,500 displaced by tidal waves at Blekusu in Ketu South"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least 1,500 persons have been displaced by the tidal waves that swept through\u00a0Blekusu, a fishing community in the Ketu South Municipality of Volta Region in the early hours of Sunday, according to officials from the\u00a0National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).<\/p>\n<p>The waves left parts of the area flooded with residents having to salvage what property they could to higher ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-327529 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ketu-South-Tidal-Waves-4.jpg\" alt=\"ketu-south-tidal-waves-4\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-327530\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ketu-South-Tidal-Waves-5.jpg\" alt=\"ketu-south-tidal-waves-5\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, Pascal Agbagba, the Head of Management Information System at the Volta Regional NADMO, said his outfit is still assessing the impact of the waves and the subsequent flooding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So far, we have about 186 households affected. Averagely we have six people in a house so you can round that up to about 1,500 people affected\u2026 there were no casualties but the people are displaced,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-327527 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ketu-South-Tidal-Waves-2.jpg\" alt=\"ketu-south-tidal-waves-2\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_327528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-327528\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-327528\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ketu-South-Tidal-Waves-3.jpg\" alt=\"A proposed site for the permanent relocation of some residents\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-327528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A proposed site for the permanent relocation of some residents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NADMO has started looking for safe havens for them as Mr. Agbagba noted that \u201cthe way people are talking about their past experiences, the likelihood of the waves coming in the evening is high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NADMO has so far identified some classrooms, some chapels, the area&#8217;s health centre and a teachers&#8217; quarters as a possible shelter for the displaced residents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-327526 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ketu-South-Tidal-Waves-1.jpg\" alt=\"ketu-south-tidal-waves-1\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, also made his way to the community and noted that, some support from the government would be needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have seen what has happened and there is the need for intervention from the State.
