The cuts will result in a restructuring charge of $1.1 billion to $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In an e-mail to employees, Nadella positioned the job cuts as part of the evolution of Microsoft\u2019s culture as he reorients its direction toward the growth occurring in mobile devices and the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Elop, formerly the CEO of Nokia and now head of Microsoft\u2019s devices business, told employees that the role of mobile devices is different within larger structure of Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur device strategy must reflect Microsoft\u2019s strategy and must be accomplished within an appropriate financial envelope,\u201d Elop wrote. Of the 18,000 planned job cuts, most of which will take place in the next six months, about 12,500 will come from the Nokia business.<\/p>\n<p>Nadella, who took over as chief executive in February, is just Microsoft\u2019s third CEO after\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/steve-ballmer\/\">Steve Ballmer<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/bill-gates\/\">Bill Gates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Microsoft were up 3.6% in pre-market trading Thursday following the announcement, and have gained almost 18% this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: Forbes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Satya Nadella is putting his stamp on\u00a0Microsoft\u00a0, and for thousands of employees that means a pink slip.
