Major Maxwell Mahama<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>who was killed in the line of duty at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region.<\/p>\nPresident Akufo-Addo announced the package when he visited the family on Monday [June 5], as it observed\u00a0a week of the military man\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”kXTxarbxg2cg5Wf2zvD05Xe45LKKGpol”]According to the president, the fund is specifically to take care of Major Mahama\u2019s wife and two children.<\/p>\n
He also pledged a personal donation of GH\u00a250,000 to the fund, which will have as part of its trustees Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, and former government\u00a0statistician, Grace Bediako.<\/p>\n
Other dignitaries who accompanied the president were Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo, Minister for Defense Dominic Nitiwul, National Security Minister Kan Dapaah and Trade Minister Alan Kyeremanten.<\/p>\n
Describing Major Mahama as a national hero, Nana Akufo-Addo added that, a state burial will be held for the soldier.<\/p>\n
He also noted that, the family\u2019s request that a monument is built to remind Ghanaians of the incident and the need to end the act of mob justice, will be granted.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Nana Akufo-Addo has approved a recommendation from the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. O.B. Akwa that the late Captain Mahama be promoted to the rank of Major.<\/p>\n
The deceased, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was lynched and partly burnt by some youth of Denenkyira-Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region on Monday, May 29, 2017, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.<\/p>\n
About 41 people have been remanded in police custody<\/strong><\/a><\/span> over their alleged involvement in the gruesome killing of the officer.<\/p>\nThe family has set June 9, as the date for the burial of Captain Adams Mahama.<\/p>\n
