University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, has said it has learnt with regret the death of Ghanaian soldier, Captain Maxwell Mahama, who was lynched by a community that mistook him for a robber.<\/p>\n

The school in a post on its website said \u201cwe have learnt, with great regret, of the death of Maxwell Mahama, a Captain in the Ghanaian Army.\u201d<\/p>\n

[contextly_sidebar id=”p4nBqYZfs9WRxWNplReiRwwdox1KedBy”]The school said Capt. Mahama was a “distance learning student in the Department of Criminology reading for the degree of Master of Science (MSc) in Security and Risk Management.”<\/p>\n

The post added that, \u201cHe had enrolled on the degree in 2015 and was due to graduate at this summer\u2019s degree ceremonies.”<\/p>\n

Capt.\u00a0Mahama\u00a0was an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, and was said to be on his daily jogging routine on Monday, when he was lynched\u00a0by some residents of Denkyira Obuasi.<\/p>\n

He had been deployed there as part of an anti-illegal mining operation.<\/p>\n

The residents claimed Captain Mahama was a robber as\u00a0he was in mufti at the time, and had a weapon on him.<\/p>\n

Seven persons have so far been put on trial for their alleged roles in the murder.<\/p>\n

The incident ha shocked Ghanaians and has angered army personnel who almost vented their spleen on the community members.<\/p>\n

The incident has been condemned by all well-meaning Ghanaians, and the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has vowed to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime are punished.<\/p>\n
