{"id":324367,"date":"2017-06-01T11:44:33","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T11:44:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=324367"},"modified":"2017-06-01T11:44:33","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T11:44:33","slug":"ghanaians-others-die-of-thirst-in-sahara-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/06\/ghanaians-others-die-of-thirst-in-sahara-desert\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghanaians, others &#8216;die of thirst&#8217; in Sahara Desert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Survivors say 44 people have died of thirst after their truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, the Red Cross has told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Ghanaians and Nigerians were trying to get to Libya, according to Nigerien news site Sahelien.<\/p>\n<p>The six survivors, all women, walked to a remote village and are being looked after in Dirkou, Niger, Red Cross official Lawal Taher said.<\/p>\n<p>They say several children among the dead.<\/p>\n<p>So far no-one has visited the site to identify the bodies, Mr Taher added.<\/p>\n<p>The route from Niger to Libya is one of the main ways migrants reach North Africa before crossing the Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img responsive-image__img--loading js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/C92C\/production\/_96300515_dirkou.jpg\" alt=\"Map\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Crossing the Sahara is one of the most perilous parts of the journey as migrants are crammed into pickup trucks often with only enough room for a few litres of water, reports Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities told Reuters that is it almost impossible to know how many have died in the vast and unpoliced Sahara.<\/p>\n<p>Last June, the bodies of 34 migrants, including 20 children, were found in the Sahara Desert near Niger&#8217;s border with Algeria.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared they had died of thirst after being abandoned by their smuggler, a government minister said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Survivors say 44 people have died of thirst after their truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, the Red Cross has told the BBC.
