{"id":32338,"date":"2014-07-16T15:04:35","date_gmt":"2014-07-16T15:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=32338"},"modified":"2014-07-16T15:04:35","modified_gmt":"2014-07-16T15:04:35","slug":"student-groups-postpone-planned-3-day-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/07\/student-groups-postpone-planned-3-day-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Student groups postpone planned 3-day protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 3-day national protest by the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) which was scheduled to begin from Wednesday has been re-scheduled for July 29.<\/p>\n<p>The postponement is as a result of a restraining order obtained by the police from an Accra Circuit Court.<\/p>\n<p>The Police Service cited security implications and inadequate personnel as reasons in order to obtain the order from that court.<\/p>\n<p>The two student unions joined forces to protest against, what they call \u201cunfortunate happenings\u201d in the country\u2019s educational system.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the issues which provoked the planned protest by GNUPS and NUGS include the indefinite strike by polytechnic teachers, closure of polytechnics and non-payment of nurses and midwives trainees\u2019 allowance.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <b>Citi News<\/b>, the secretary of GNUPS, Kwame Amponsah, indicated that the unions do not intend to violate the court order, hence the rescheduling.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the on the advice of the police, who had informed them that they would be unable to provide enough personnel to ensure the security of the protesters, the Unions decided to postpone their protest.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Greater Accra Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of\u00a0 Police (DCOP) Tetteh Yohunu, told <b>Citi News<\/b> that his outfit had been in touch with the unions and would be prepared to provide personnel to monitor the protest on the rescheduled date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Edwin Kwakofi\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 3-day national protest by the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS) and the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) which was scheduled to begin from Wednesday has been re-scheduled for July 29.
