{"id":323140,"date":"2017-05-27T17:58:54","date_gmt":"2017-05-27T17:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=323140"},"modified":"2017-05-27T17:58:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-27T17:58:54","slug":"pigeon-caught-with-backpack-of-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/pigeon-caught-with-backpack-of-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"Pigeon &#8216;caught with backpack of drugs&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Customs officials in Kuwait have apprehended a pigeon carrying drugs in a miniature backpack, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai reports.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 178 pills were found in the fabric pocket attached to its back, the newspaper says.<\/p>\n<p>The bird was caught near the customs building in Abdali, close to the border with Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>An al-Rai journalist said the drugs were a form of ketamine, an anaesthetic also used as an illegal party drug.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah Fahmi told the BBC that customs officials already knew pigeons were being used to smuggle drugs, but this was the first time they had caught a bird in the act.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/B838\/production\/_96206174_pigeon_2.jpg\" alt=\"Pigeon found carrying drugs in Kuwait\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Law enforcement officials elsewhere have, however, identified previous cases where pigeons have been used to carry lightweight high-value narcotics.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, prison guards in Costa Rica caught a pigeon carrying cocaine and cannabis in a zipped pouch.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2011, Colombian police discovered a pigeon that was unable to fly over a high prison wall because of the weight of a package of cocaine and marijuana strapped to it.<\/p>\n<p>Pigeons have been used to carry messages since Roman times, using their powerful &#8220;homing&#8221; ability.<\/p>\n<p>Racing pigeons can return to their lofts from distances of hundreds of kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Customs officials in Kuwait have apprehended a pigeon carrying drugs in a miniature backpack, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai reports.
