{"id":317887,"date":"2017-05-10T12:39:23","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T12:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=317887"},"modified":"2017-05-10T12:39:23","modified_gmt":"2017-05-10T12:39:23","slug":"fifa-ratifies-nine-african-world-cup-places","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/fifa-ratifies-nine-african-world-cup-places\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifa ratifies nine African World Cup places"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sp-story-body__introduction\">The Fifa Council has ratified<i class=\"sp-story-body__external-link-icon gelicon gelicon--external\"><\/i> the decision to give Africa nine automatic places when the World Cup expands to 48 teams in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The move was confirmed on Tuesday in Bahrain &#8211; the continent currently has five spots at the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>A tenth African country will take part in a six-nation play-off tournament to decide the last two spots.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of the Fifa Council made the original proposal of how it planned to allocate the 48 places<i class=\"sp-story-body__external-link-icon gelicon gelicon--external\"><\/i> on 30 March.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded World Cup will feature 16 teams from Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Fifa members voted in January to expand the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams, starting with the 2026 edition.<\/p>\n<p><b>Allocation:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Asia:<\/b> 8 direct slots &#8211; increased from 4.5 (currently 46 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>Africa:<\/b> 9 direct slots &#8211; increased from 5 (currently 54 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>North and central America:<\/b> 6 direct slots &#8211; increased from 3.5 (currently 34 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>South America:<\/b> 6 direct slots &#8211; increased from 4.5 (currently 10 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>Oceania:<\/b> 1 direct slot &#8211; increased from 0.5 (currently 11 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>Europe:<\/b> 16 direct slots &#8211; increased from 13 (currently 55 members)<\/li>\n<li><b>Final\u00a0<\/b>two places in 2026 decided by six-team play-offs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>NB:<\/b> Currently teams from Asia, north and central America, South America and Oceania play-off for two places hence .5 spots above.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fifa Council has ratified the decision to give Africa nine automatic places when the World Cup expands to 48 teams in 2026.
