{"id":316578,"date":"2017-05-05T06:00:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T06:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=316578"},"modified":"2017-05-05T06:00:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-05T06:00:46","slug":"prioritize-teaching-of-african-languages-not-french-lecturer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/prioritize-teaching-of-african-languages-not-french-lecturer\/","title":{"rendered":"Prioritize teaching of African languages; not French \u2013 Lecturer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A lecturer at the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ghana, Dr. Obadele Kambo, \u00a0has challenged President\u2019s Akufo-Addo\u2019s decision to make the study of <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/05\/04\/study-of-french-to-be-compulsory-in-shs-akufo-addo\/\"><strong>French language<\/strong><\/a><\/span> compulsory in basic and second cycle institutions.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, although the study of French as an international language in schools was important, the country must prioritize the teaching of languages such as Yuroba, Kiswahili and Wolof.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;wJgSgmVWoLHUeI9KZB06OnXf4Nfx1uLn&#8221;]His comment comes on the back of a revelation by President Akufo-Addo that the government is working to make the study of French language compulsory from primary through to\u00a0Senior High Schools.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Ghana, which is surrounded by three francophone countries, must not be seen to be lagging behind in communicating in the French language, adding that being proficient in the language will \u201cempower our population with the capacity to survive in this ECOWAS environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But according to Dr. Kambon, the study of other African languages would rather promote African unity and collective gains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can really start to understand that we are African people, then we can go beyond just looking at the Western languages of our colonial enemies and western languages of our villages to actually learning other African languages.
