National Electricity Companies in West Africa are seeking to establish a reliable power grid for the West African sub-region.<\/p>\n
The cooperation, dubbed the \u2018West African Power Pool\u2019 will see the establishment of a plant in Ghana to generate about 450 megawatts of power to some selected West African countries.<\/p>\n
President John Mahama who revealed this when the President of Sierra Leone paid a courtesy call on him expressed the hope that the 450 megawatts of power will help propel economic growth in the sub-region.<\/p>\n
He noted that West Africa is currently experiencing fast growth but one of the major constraints is energy supply.<\/p>\n
The President therefore indicated that in his capacity as Chairman on ECOWAS, he will focus on \u201chow we can push through the integration of our infrastructure, most especially, energy.\u201d<\/p>\n
A plant will be set up in the Western Region under the West African Power Pool project \u201cto utilize Ghanaian gas from our future gas discoveries to produce 450 megawatts of power.\u201d<\/p>\n
The generated power will then be transmitted through Cote D\u2019Ivoire to Liberia and Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
He expressed the hope that the additional power to the Liberia and Sierra Leone \u201cwill continue to spur the growth that they we are seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n
