Following the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ declaration of a 21-day ultimatum to all illegal miners to cease their operations and surrender their equipment, a number of significant actions have taken place.<\/p>\n
These actions form part of concerted national efforts to root out the illegal mining menace that has devastated the country\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n
The infographic below details the key actions that have happened within the 21-day ultimatum period.<\/p>\n
The key actors as shown in the image include the Media, Judiciary, Security agencies and the Ministry.<\/p>\n
<\/a><\/p>\n Many communities in Ghana are currently suffering the negative effects of galamsey which has left most of Ghana\u2019s fresh water poisonous.<\/p>\n Thousands of acres of fertile farmlands have also been destroyed as a result of\u00a0galamsey<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. Although Ghana\u2019s laws are clear on illegal mining, the activity has been allowed to continue for more than two decades.<\/p>\n Citi FM<\/strong>\u00a0has been at the forefront of media advocacy and crusade for action against the illegal activity.<\/p>\n The station has among other things petitioned parliament to act to stop the illegal activity.<\/p>\n It is unclear what government\u2019s next line of action is with regards to completely addressing the problem.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Jonas Nyabor\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
