{"id":312690,"date":"2017-04-21T07:59:35","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T07:59:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=312690"},"modified":"2017-04-21T07:59:35","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T07:59:35","slug":"accra-devastated-by-floods-again-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/accra-devastated-by-floods-again-photos\/","title":{"rendered":"Accra devastated by floods again Photos]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many parts of Ghana\u2019s capital, Accra, were devastated by floods following one hour of rain on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The situation made it very difficult for some motorists to continue their journeys due to the pressure of the flood waters on highways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/21\/accra-devastated-by-floods-again-video\/sahara-flood-5\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-312722\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-312722\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sahara-flood-5-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"sahara-flood-5\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Residents in areas including Adabraka-Sahara in the capital, were left frustrated as they spent several hours into midnight salvaging their properties and scooping out rainwater that had flooded their houses.<\/p>\n<p>Some residents told <strong>Citi News<\/strong>&#8216; Kojo Agyeman that they had no option than to leave the area and search for safe grounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/21\/accra-devastated-by-floods-again-video\/sahara-flood-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-312720\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-312720\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sahara-flood-3-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"sahara-flood-3\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aftermath of the downpour left pools of water on some major roads including the Abeka Junction section of the Achimota-Accra road, Mallam Junction, as well as the Okponglo section of the Madina-37 highway.<\/p>\n<p>Filth has also engulfed some parts of the capital after the downpour.<\/p>\n<p>The flood raises questions about governments; past and present&#8217;s competence to address the problem which has become a perennial one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/21\/accra-devastated-by-floods-again-video\/sahara-flood-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-312719\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-312719\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sahara-flood-2-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"sahara-flood-2\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a>Following a downpour in February 2017 that wrecked havoc in the area, the Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, said the country requires $700 million to permanently fix the issue.<\/p>\n<p>But before the amount is raised to commence works to halt the floods, city authorities and the Greater Accra regional minister have contracted a private company to dredge some major drains in the capital to allow water to flow freely whenever it rains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_312709\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-312709\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/21\/accra-devastated-by-floods-again-video\/accra-flood-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-312709\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-312709\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Accra-Flood.jpg\" alt=\"Legon Photo credit: Mensa Duncan\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-312709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">N4 Highway (Legon).
