{"id":308736,"date":"2017-04-07T10:40:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T10:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=308736"},"modified":"2017-04-07T10:40:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T10:40:00","slug":"delta-force-escape-caught-us-off-guard-ashanti-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/delta-force-escape-caught-us-off-guard-ashanti-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Delta Force escape caught us off guard &#8211; Ashanti Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the escape of 13 accused members of the\u00a0New Patriotic Party-affiliated vigilante group, Delta Force, from the Kumasi circuit court, the Ashanti Regional Police command has revealed that its personnel at the court may have been blindsided by the route the Delta Force members used.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ashanti Regional Police&#8217;s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nketia Yeboah, the members of the vigilante group fled through a restricted area meant for judges and the police personnel were not expecting that.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;1A8nBsgEYpHNJfJV0aP9E1eVozjFXB1d&#8221;]The 13 <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/06\/npp-delta-force-storms-court-set-suspects-free\/\">escaped<\/a><\/strong><\/span> after other members of the vigilante group monitoring the court proceedings sparked confusion on Thursday during the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>, ASP Yeboah explained that the Delta Force\u2019s escape route was \u201cthrough a restricted area where no one was allowed to go. There has not been a precedent of that in any country. But we learn from such incidents and we have taken notice\u2026 it is not that we stood aloof or unconcerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not the number [of police personnel] that determined the escape or anything of that sort\u2026 if you were there, it will never occur to you that somebody will pass there,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maintaining law and order not beyond us<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Ashanti Region has seen some of the more extreme instances of vigilante action in recent times, beginning with the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/03\/31\/delta-force-backtracks-pledges-support-to-security-coordinator\/\">Delta Force\u2019s raiding<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of the Regional Coordinating Council where they assaulted the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Adjei, and culminating the havoc at the Kumasi Circuit court.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_304683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-304683\" style=\"width: 695px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-304683\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Delta-Force-e1491560611197.jpg\" alt=\"File photo\" width=\"695\" height=\"385\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-304683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo: Delta Force members<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With growing concerns of the police\u2019s perceived laxity towards vigilante groups across the country, ASP Yeboah assured that the Ashanti Regional Police Comand was capable of ensuring law and order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not beyond us and the Ashanti Regional Police command can handle it\u2026 we didn\u2019t just sit by. We want to prove that, contrary to the negative perceptions, we are up to the task,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Regional commander was the Northern Regional commander for about three years and you can imagine some of the cases that came up during his tenure. All of us are proven police officers. There is no way we will let things go out of hand like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Escaped Delta Force members in police custody<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ASP Yeboah was speaking after it was confirmed that the 13 accused members of the NPP-affiliated vigilante group <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/07\/escaped-delta-force-members-report-themselves-to-police\/\">reported themselves<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to Police and are in custody.<\/p>\n<p>The 13 Delta Force members were facing charges for besieging Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and the judge had ruled that the 13 be remanded to reappear before the court on the 20th of April, 2017 after charges of conspiracy to assault a public officer and causing unlawful damage.<\/p>\n<p>The displeasure with the ruling sparked the confusion at the court leading to the escape of the 13.
