Mining giant, Newmont Ghana was given a huge concession of 550 square kilometres spanning some three districts in the Brong Ahafo Region, known as the Ahafo lease.<\/p>\n

But before the concession, a number of farmers were operating on the land.<\/p>\n

Citi News\u2019<\/strong> Umaru Sanda Amadu travelled to the gold mining areas of the Brong Ahafo Region to investigate if the activities Newmont Ghana have any effect on the crops produced in the region which is Ghana\u2019s food basket.<\/p>\n

The Brong Ahafo Region, which covers Newmont\u2019s concessions, accounts for 20-30 percent of Ghana\u2019s total food supply, according to statistics from the Regional Directorate of Agriculture.<\/p>\n

Newmont has four mining pits covering several dozen kilometres of land where it carries out surface mining. The key communities affected by the mining include\u00a0Kenyasi No. 1 and 2, Ntotroso, Wamahinso and Gyedu.<\/p>\n
