{"id":307176,"date":"2017-04-02T12:30:47","date_gmt":"2017-04-02T12:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=307176"},"modified":"2017-04-02T12:30:47","modified_gmt":"2017-04-02T12:30:47","slug":"adabraka-residents-quench-fire-with-gutter-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/adabraka-residents-quench-fire-with-gutter-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Adabraka: Residents quench fire with gutter water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fire Service bore the scorn of residents in and around Odawna Fitting Shop, a suburb of Adabraka in Accra, as the residents were forced to intervene when a Toyata SUV burst into flames in the middle of the street.<\/p>\n<p>The residents called the Fire Service after they had alerted the driver of the car that the engine had caught fire, but it took the service about 30 minutes to reach the scene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307192 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-17.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-17\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307183 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-8.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-8\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In between then, one of the residents, Freddy Reindorf, came up with the bright idea of resorting to the drain to fetch some runoff water because there was no water running through the pipes, and no one in the community was willing to sacrifice buckets of water to quench the fire of a stranger\u2019s car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI entered the gutter and started to quickly fetch the water running through the drain for them. We got about three buckets. Then one other resident helped us with buckets and we got about four or five more buckets,\u201d Freddy recounted to <strong>Citi News<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307191 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-16.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-16\" width=\"615\" height=\"417\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307181 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-6.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-6\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fire started out mild, but the residents could only do so much with the slow supply of water from the drain. After about 7 minutes, there was a small explosion in the engine as the fire proceeded to spread to the rest of the car.<\/p>\n<p>When the fire service finally got to the scene, the car had already seen extensive damage from the fire and some residents feel this could have been avoided if the fire service had arrived on time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-307185 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-10.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-10\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-307186 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-11.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-11\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as the fire truck\u2019s sirens and it approached the scene, the residents started to hoot at the fire service personnel, clearly vexed at the fact they were arriving on the scene some 30 minutes after the fact.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-307202 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/ssds.jpg\" alt=\"ssds\" width=\"630\" height=\"422\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-307197\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Odawna-fitting-shop-fire-5.jpg\" alt=\"odawna-fitting-shop-fire-5\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An eyewitness, Emmanuel Mantey, spoke to <strong>Citi News<\/strong> and voiced their concerns. According to him, he could hear people trying to call radio stations and the fire service as soon as the fire started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at this location, I know there is a fire station at Makola and another one at Circle. Looking at the\u00a0distance from there to this place, if you are driving, you should be here in 5 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took the efforts of the neighbours to try and quench this fire. Indeed, the fire service is here and not a single drop of their water contributed to the quenching of this fire\u2026 There have been several complaints about the response rate of the fire service. As a nation, we should get serious and work on this thing because it could be someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pace at which we were getting the water to even pour on the car wasn\u2019t that good. People were fetching the [drain] water to quench the fire.
