{"id":306975,"date":"2017-04-01T12:29:05","date_gmt":"2017-04-01T12:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=306975"},"modified":"2017-04-01T12:29:05","modified_gmt":"2017-04-01T12:29:05","slug":"ayariga-stands-by-bribery-allegations-despite-apology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/04\/ayariga-stands-by-bribery-allegations-despite-apology\/","title":{"rendered":"Ayariga stands by bribery allegations despite apology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite being charged with contempt of Parliament and subsequently compelled to apologize for the bribery allegations he made against Members of the Appointments Committee and the Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has said he still stands by his claims.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>The Big Issue <\/strong>on <strong>Citi FM<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>today [Saturday], Mr. Ayariga said he would not go back on the oath he swore when he testified to the allegations before the Joe Ghartey committee.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;XNhMvKhzhGFq3J0qvJ56U8PJy8qgBJUf&#8221;]\u201cI swore an oath and told what I went through\u2026 those are facts. If somebody evaluates and says that he doesn\u2019t believe it, that is his conclusion based on his analysis. But the fact that you have lived through that and you said it under oath means it should stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Joe Ghartey committee concluded that, Mr. Ayariga <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/03\/30\/joe-ghartey-committee-rubbishes-ayarigas-bribery-claims\/\">fell foul<\/a><\/strong><\/span> of Article 122 of the 1992 Constitution, Section 32 of the Parliament Act, 1965 (Act 300) and Orders 28 and 30 (2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament and thus recommended that the Bawku Central MP be made to apologize to Speaker of Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament voted to approve the committee&#8217;s report leading to <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/contextly.com\/redirect\/?id=XoJfrEVIGY:306975:2934:13:::sidebar:58df9e62af01f0-11690631\">an apology<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from Mr. Ayariga, but the MP cautioned that the House&#8217;s adoption of the report without any debate could have further legal implications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe decision of the House raises serious legal issues. If you say I should retract, but I swore an oath, would that now be perjury?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parliament needed &#8216;additional wisdom&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ayariga further hinted at some legal recourse after the Speaker gives his final ruling on the Joe Ghartey committee&#8217;s report and process, which he described as restrictive.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, a debate on the report would have prevented any potential legal fallout in the matter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-306986 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speaker-of-Parliament-Prof.-Mike-Oquaye..jpg\" alt=\"speaker-of-parliament-prof-mike-oquaye\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maybe, the first thing you do is you comply with the decision of the House and then you institute legal challenges with those decisions\u00a0so that you state to a court your grounds and the court will now examine all the other areas of law and then come to a conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is why they should have allowed debate on the report, as discerning legal minds would have had an opportunity to draw attention to all these issues and that would have enriched the conclusion of the House when voting on the matter.
