Major roads in Accra will be closed for the two-day meeting of Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of state.

The Director General of Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP David Ampah Banin revealed this in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show.

Mr. Banin said the main roads from Movenpick Hotel to the Airport traffic light and the independence avenue will be closed.

“It is a dual-carriage lane, so only the Accra bound route will be closed to the general public. The other side will be opened but it will be used as ‘in and out’ so motorists can go and come on that route,” Mr. Banin explained.

David Ampah Banin also said traffic on the Liberation Road, approaching the National Theatre traffic light to the Ministries area will be diverted onto Barnes Road.

“Traffic from the Liberation Road would be diverted onto the Castle Road through the AU Circle, through Ridge Roundabout to various destinations,”Mr. Banin said

He also noted that traffic on the Independence Avenue between the AU Circle and Novotel would be on a single carriageway in both directions.

The Independence Avenue, from Association Traffic Intersection to Movenpick Hotel, will be converted into a one-way road and separated to allow smooth passage of convoys.

Traffic from the AU Circle would use the other portion of the single-carriage way in both directions.

The move is to divert massive vehicular traffic during the ECOWAS meeting from Thursday to Friday.
