Bayern Munich have confirmed that a verbal agreement has been reached between the club, Mario Mandzukic and Atletico Madrid regarding the transfer of the player to the Spanish capital.

The German champions confirmed the agreement at a press conference to outdoor their new signings, Robert Lewandowski and Sebastian Rode.

The club’s sporting director, Matthias Sammer told reporters: “There is a verbal agreement between FC Bayern, Atlético Madrid and Mario Mandzukic.

“Although nothing has been signed yet, I believe that we all will stay true to our words.

Mandzukic had been linked with a move to England, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United touted as possible destinations.

The move to the Spanish champions materialised as a result of the sale of the club’s top scorer last season, Diego Costa, to Chelsea.

“We want to thank Mario Mandzukic for his performances at FC Bayern and wish him all the best for the future,” Sammer added.

The striker, who joined Bayern from Wolfsburg in 2012, scored 33 goals in 54 appearances in the league for the club, winning the treble with Bayern in 2013.

Despite this healthy scoring record, Mandzukic was deemed surplus to requirements at Bayern by Pep Guardiola, particularly after the signing of Robert Lewandowski from Dortmund.
