{"id":295320,"date":"2017-02-18T08:46:21","date_gmt":"2017-02-18T08:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=295320"},"modified":"2017-02-18T08:46:21","modified_gmt":"2017-02-18T08:46:21","slug":"ghana-ivory-coast-maritime-boundary-dispute-judgement-set-for-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/ghana-ivory-coast-maritime-boundary-dispute-judgement-set-for-september\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana-Ivory Coast maritime boundary dispute; judgement set for September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), will deliver its judgement on the maritime boundary case between Ghana and Ivory Coast at the end of September this year.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries ended their oral submissions this week with strong arguments for their stance.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;AOEae1ZaJINdYu7B6YGawYcbZLPhBOez&#8221;]Ghana\u2019s Attorney General Gloria Akufo argued that the two countries already have an agreement on their maritime boundary, albeit informally.<\/p>\n<p>Ivory Coast, on the other hand, rejected that claim, calling on the Chamber to declare that Ghana has indeed violated the sovereign rights of Ivory Coast when it unilaterally undertook drilling activities in that boundary.<\/p>\n<p>In his final arguments at ITLOS yon Thursday, Ivory Coast\u2019s agent and Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, Adama Toungara, said,\u201c\u2026to declare and adjudge thirdly that Ghana has violated the provisional measures prescribed by this chamber by its order of 26<sup>th<\/sup> of April, 2015. And fourthly, and \u00a0consequently, <strong>[A]<\/strong> to invite the parties to carry out negotiations in order to reach agreement on arrangements for reparations due to Cote D\u2019Ivoire; and <strong>[B]<\/strong> to state that if they fail to reach an agreement within a period of six months as of the date of the judgment to be delivered by the special chamber, the chamber will determine the amount of compensation or the arrangements for reparations on the basis of additional <em>recent<\/em> documents dealing with the subject alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t be swayed by Ivory Coast\u2019s argument \u2013 Ghana to ITLOS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ghana in its final submission called on the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/15\/dont-be-swayed-by-ivory-coasts-argument-ghana-to-itlos\/\">not to be swayed by Ivory Coast\u2019s argument<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The Attorney General and leader of Ghana\u2019s delegation to the ITLOS, Gloria Akuffo, told the Special Chamber that Ivory Coast was trying to move the boundary to the east to benefit from Ghana\u2019s oil reserves, saying, \u201cthey simply cannot escape from years of mutual practice, however hard they try, in implementation of and reinforced by their own official maps, laws and decrees\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was easy to lose count of the different ways in which they tried to portray the coast.
