{"id":294300,"date":"2017-02-14T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T16:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=294300"},"modified":"2017-02-14T16:00:27","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T16:00:27","slug":"north-korean-leaders-brother-kim-jong-nam-killed-in-malaysia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/north-korean-leaders-brother-kim-jong-nam-killed-in-malaysia\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korean leader&#8217;s brother Kim Jong-nam &#8216;killed in Malaysia&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Kim Jong-nam, has been killed with poison in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, reports say.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian police said a North Korean man waiting at the airport for a flight to Macau on Monday had fallen ill and died on his way to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>However, they named him as &#8220;Kim Chol&#8221;, not Kim Jong-nam.<\/p>\n<p>The late Kim Jong-il&#8217;s eldest son is thought to have fled North Korea after being passed over for the leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, unnamed government sources reported his &#8220;killing&#8221; to media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report from TV Chosun, a cable television network in South Korea, Mr Kim, 45, was poisoned at the airport by two women, believed to be North Koreans.<\/p>\n<p>A Malaysian official who spoke to the Associated Press news agency said Kim Jong-nam had been attacked with a spray in an airport shopping area.<\/p>\n<p>A UK source with close ties to the Kim family told the BBC that poison had been involved in the death.<\/p>\n<p>An autopsy was performed on the man&#8217;s body at a hospital in Putrajaya, near Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>&#8216;Grabbed from behind&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An official statement released by Malaysian police named the dead man as &#8220;Kim Chol&#8221;, born 10 June 1970. Kim Jong-nam was born on 10 May 1971.<\/p>\n<p>Quoted by Reuters news agency, Malaysian police official Fadzil Ahmat apparently gave the dying man&#8217;s own account of what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The deceased&#8230; felt like someone grabbed or held his face from behind,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\">\n<figure style=\"width: 976px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1201A\/production\/_94645737_037896983-1.jpg\" alt=\"Passengers queue up for the security checks at the 2nd Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Malaysia, 14 February\" width=\"976\" height=\"650\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyrightAP The man who died was preparing to fly to Macau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;He felt dizzy, so he asked for help at the&#8230; counter of KLIA [Kuala Lumpur International Airport].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He was taken to an airport clinic where he still felt unwell and it was decided to take him to hospital, the police official went on.<\/p>\n<p>He died in the ambulance on the way to Putrajaya Hospital.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\">\n<figure style=\"width: 976px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/2E44\/production\/_94644811_037895531-1.jpg\" alt=\"Hospital security personnel block the entrance of the forensic department at a hospital in Putrajaya, Malaysia, 14 February\" width=\"976\" height=\"650\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyrightAP Hospital security personnel blocked the entrance of the forensic department on Tuesday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;So far there are no suspects, but we have started investigations and are looking at a few possibilities to get leads,&#8221; Mr Fadzil added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chosun TV, two North Korean women agents used poison needles to kill him before fleeing in a taxi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__crosshead\"><strong>Bypassed for succession<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2001, Mr Kim was caught trying to enter Japan using a false passport. He told officials that he was planning to visit Tokyo Disneyland.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<figure class=\"media-portrait no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img responsive-image__img--loading js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/5554\/production\/_94644812_norks_first_family.png\" alt=\"BBC graphic\" width=\"624\" height=\"750\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<p>Once seen as a likely successor to Kim Jong-il, he was thought to have fallen out of favour with his father over the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Bypassed in favour of his youngest half-brother for succession when their father died in 2011, Kim Jong-nam kept a low profile, spending most of his time overseas in Macau, Singapore and China.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\">\n<figure style=\"width: 976px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/16E3A\/production\/_94645739_037896818-1.jpg\" alt=\"Malaysian journalists gather outside the forensics department at Putrajaya Hospital in Putrajaya, 14 February\" width=\"976\" height=\"650\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image copyrightAFP Malaysian journalists gathered outside the hospital<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He was quoted by Japanese media in 2011 as saying he opposed &#8220;dynastic succession&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He was also quoted in a 2012 book as saying he believed his younger half-brother lacked leadership qualities, the succession would not work and that North Korea was unstable and needed Chinese-style economic reform.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kim was reportedly targeted for assassination in the past.
