{"id":29405,"date":"2014-07-03T08:25:39","date_gmt":"2014-07-03T08:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=29405"},"modified":"2014-07-03T08:25:39","modified_gmt":"2014-07-03T08:25:39","slug":"cric-calls-for-referendum-on-the-1992-constitution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2014\/07\/cric-calls-for-referendum-on-the-1992-constitution\/","title":{"rendered":"CRIC calls for Referendum on the 1992 constitution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) has suggested that a Referendum should be held alongside the district assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p>Such simultaneous exercise if adhered to by government will save cost and also facilitate the amendment of some portions of the 1992 constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC), Professor E.V.O Dankwa made the suggestion in Tamale where he interacted with participants during the second lap of the regional stakeholder briefing on the Constitution Review Implementation Committee\u2019s process.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the recommendations, Professor Dankwa said the National Development Planning Commission (NDC) will be mandated to develop a long term strategic national development plan to serve as a blue print for successive governments to follow.<\/p>\n<p>He also disclosed that there will be the need to set up an Independent Emolument Commission to be in charge of determining the ex-gratia of public servants.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Dankwa further said Chairman of the Council of State will be elected by members rather than the President appointing him\/her.<\/p>\n<p>He said simple majority Parliamentarians vote can necessitate the annulment of some subsidiary laws which are inconsistent with the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the participants drawn from civil society organizations opined that the amendment of the 1992 constitution was long overdue.<\/p>\n<p>They endorsed the proposal to elect Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Electives.<\/p>\n<p>This in their estimation will deepen good governance at the local level.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Abdul Karim Naatogmah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Constitution Review Implementation Committee (CRIC) has suggested that a Referendum should be held alongside the district assembly elections.
