{"id":292369,"date":"2017-02-09T06:00:28","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T06:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=292369"},"modified":"2017-02-09T06:00:28","modified_gmt":"2017-02-09T06:00:28","slug":"otikos-service-waiver-temporary-nss-boss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/otikos-service-waiver-temporary-nss-boss\/","title":{"rendered":"Otiko&#8217;s service waiver temporary &#8211; NSS boss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has emerged that Otiko Afisa Djaba\u2019s exemption from the mandatory national service, following her controversial approval as the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, is only temporary.<\/p>\n<p>According to the acting Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Ussif Mustapha, Madam Djaba\u2019s brief\u00a0exemption, is because there is currently no board in place for the NSS.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;Jhk7Pt2qiFsXzM1rNwpbjxg2XqG9UOZH&#8221;]Prior to Madam Djaba\u2019s approval for her ministerial portfolio in Parliament on Tuesday, the Majority leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, said the then nominee, following her vetting, secured an exemption from the National Service Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the waiver on her National Service made her eligible to be employed in any institution in the country, as required by the National Service Act 426.<\/p>\n<p>Madam Djaba was 47 at the time she graduated from the University of Development Studies (UDS), also making her eligible for the waiver.<\/p>\n<p>She was eventually <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/08\/nana-addo-swears-in-second-batch-of-ministers\/\">sworn in<\/a><\/strong><\/span> as the\u00a0Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister on Tuesday evening only by majority votes.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on <strong>Eyewitness News<\/strong>, Ussif Mustapha said, \u201cshe has written to us, applied for an exemption and we have given her a temporal letter that will grant her the exemption whilst we are waiting for the board to be constituted properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite no board being constituted for the NSS, the NSS Head stated that, the temporary waiver was granted in consultation with the President and the Education Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen there is no board, the president and the minister, which the president has appointed, is the person we consult during this period and he was duly consulted,\u201d\u00a0Ussif Mustapha explained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NDC MP threatens lawsuit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the exemption, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for the Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Norgbey, has <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/02\/08\/ill-challenge-otikos-approval-in-court-ashaiman-mp\/\">hinted of legal action<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to challenge the approval of the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the minister\u2019s failure to undertake the mandatory one-year national service makes it illegal for her to occupy the ministerial position.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Delali Adogla-Bessa\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It has emerged that Otiko Afisa Djaba\u2019s exemption from the mandatory national service, following her controversial approval as the Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, is only temporary.
