Marvel Studios announced on Thursday that filming had begun on its latest superhero epic which for the first time will feature a black actor, Chadwick Boseman, in the titular role.<\/p>\n
The news comes just after a record number of black actors were nominated for this year\u2019s Oscars and as Hollywood pushes for more diversity.<\/p>\n
Boseman will play the lead role in the hotly anticipated \u201cBlack Panther\u201d alongside a star-studded cast including Michael B. Jordan, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong\u2019o, Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker.<\/p>\n
The film follows the events after 2016\u2019s \u201cCaptain America: Civil War,\u201d in which Boseman appeared as Marvel\u2019s first African superhero, but not in the lead role.<\/p>\n
The movie was the year\u2019s biggest box office hit, amassing $1.15 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n
In \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d T\u2019Challa (Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as its king, Marvel said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T\u2019Challa\u2019s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
\u201cBlack Panther,\u201d which is being filmed in Atlanta and South Korea, is scheduled for release in February of next year.<\/p>\n
