Donald Trump has ordered his new administration to publish a weekly list of crimes committed by immigrants.<\/p>\n
The US\u00a0President\u2019s sweeping new\u00a0executive order on immigration, which he\u00a0signed on the fifth day of his presidency, includes\u00a0a paragraph mandating the Secretary for Homeland Security to \u201cmake public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens\u201d in the US.<\/p>\n
The list will also include details of so-called \u201csanctuary cities\u201d that refuse to hand over immigrant residents for deportation.<\/p>\n
The order reads:<\/p>\n
To better inform the public regarding the public safety threats associated with sanctuary jurisdictions, the Secretary shall utilize the Declined Detainer Outcome Report or its equivalent and, on a weekly basis, make public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignored or otherwise failed to honor any detainers with respect to such aliens.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n It\u00a0does not specify that only crimes committed by illegal immigrants should be included – raising the prospect of offences committed by any immigrant\u00a0being published even if the person is living in the US legally.<\/p>\n The decision to publish a list of immigrant crimes is reminiscent of the \u2018Black crime\u2019 listings on Breitbart News – the\u00a0far-right\u00a0website that until recently was run by Steve Bannon, who is now Mr Trump\u2019s chief strategist.<\/p>\n In an executive order titled “Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements”, Mr Trump signed into law many of the pledges\u00a0he\u00a0made during his election campaign. These include building a wall along the US-Mexico border, deporting\u00a0illegal immigrants, establishing\u00a0new immigration detention centres and hiring\u00a05,000 more Border Patrol agents.<\/p>\n The order claimed the measures were needed to \u201censure the safety and territorial integrity of the United States\u201d and said illegal immigrants \u201cpresent a significant threat to national security and public safety\u201d.<\/p>\n On signing the order, the President read out the names of US citizens\u00a0who were murdered by illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n Mr Trump has repeatedly promised to deport millions of undocumented migrants from the US. During the presidential campaign, he said: \u00a0\u201cWe have some bad hombres, and we\u2019re going to get them out\u201d.<\/p>\n On the issue of Mexican immigrants, he said: \u201cThey\u2019re bringing drugs. They\u2019re bringing crime. They\u2019re rapists and some, I assume, are good people\u201d.<\/p>\n The Republican pledged to remove 11 million undocumented migrants from the US within the first two years of his presidency, although later said the real number would be \u201cprobably two million, even three million\u201d.<\/p>\n There are an estimated 820,000 undocumented migrants with criminal records in the US.<\/p>\n In response to Mr Trump\u2019s threat, the Democrat mayors of a number of large US cities, including New York, Chicago and Seattle, said they would refuse to co-operate with federal authorities attempting to deport immigrants.<\/p>\n The Republican responded by saying he would starve such cities of federal funding, and has now signed this into law via a second executive order, signed on the same day and titled \u2018Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States\u2019.<\/p>\n This states that \u201csanctuary jurisdictions\u201d are \u201cnot eligible to received Federal grants\u201d.<\/p>\n However, some experts have suggested\u00a0such a move could be illegal.\u00a0US law says federal funds can only be withheld if a city or state refuses to do something directly related to the funding they are receiving.<\/p>\n For example, money earmarked for education or economic investment could not be withheld if a city refused to comply with immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n Source: The Indipendent<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Donald Trump has ordered his new administration to publish a weekly list of crimes committed by immigrants.
