{"id":288070,"date":"2017-01-25T15:25:11","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T15:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=288070"},"modified":"2017-01-25T15:25:11","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T15:25:11","slug":"shops-ghc50000-worth-of-goods-destroyed-in-sekondi-market-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/01\/shops-ghc50000-worth-of-goods-destroyed-in-sekondi-market-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Shops, GHc50,000 worth of goods destroyed in Sekondi Market fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some seven shops belonging to 17 traders at the Sekondi Market in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, have been razed by a fire that started on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The fire, which according to eyewitnesses started at about\u00a03:00am, took firefighters over an hour to quench it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288074\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-3.jpg\" alt=\"sekondi-market-fire-3\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Properties worth over Gh50,000 were demolished. Items destroyed include six Corn Mill machines, several bags of imported dried pepper, bags of maize, colander among others. The cause of the fire is not yet known.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288075\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-4.jpg\" alt=\"sekondi-market-fire-4\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A security guard at the market who noticed when the fire started, recounted that, \u00a0\u201cat about\u00a03:00am, there were calls of a fire outbreak. We rushed there, and saw that it is true. One of us went to inform the police and\u00a0they also notified the fire service. It took the fire service from\u00a03:00am\u00a0to about\u00a05:00am\u00a0before they could put the fire off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the heavily affected portions of the market, is the corn milling division.\u00a0Fire fighters\u00a0are investigating the the cause of the fire, which is not the first to have occurred in that particular market, just like many other markets across the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288076\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-5.jpg\" alt=\"sekondi-market-fire-5\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But some traders suspect the fire might have started from the corn millers&#8217; end.<\/p>\n<p>One of the female supervisors of the market, Anita Mensah, explained that she had cautioned the corn millers of their activities which are done in the night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;But they will also say because they mill pepper in large quantities, they have been advised to carry out their activity in the night to prevent the possible spread of powdered pepper and its effects on traders, so you cannot blame them so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-288077\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Sekondi-Market-fire-1.jpg\" alt=\"sekondi-market-fire-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others also suspect the fire might have been triggered by an electrical\u00a0fault.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took the power at some point. So we suspect they did not put out all their electrical gadgets and so when the power came, the fire might have sparked\u201d.
