The Greater Accra Police Command has dispatched a team of officers to secure the Palace of the Ga Mantse in Accra, following near-fatal clashes there on Tuesday. It took the police more than two hours to prevent scores of armed, well-built men from firing shots at each other.

The clashes occurred during an induction ceremony of the Ga Mantse, Nii Adama Latse, as the President of the Ga Traditional Council, following an order from the High Court last week, for the ceremony to take place within seven days.

But an opposing faction stormed the palace to prevent the event from taking place.

Scores of people were critically wounded in the process.

The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, ASP Effia Tenge, says the police officers will remain at the palace till all grievances are resolved.

"police-2"

“We had information that some thugs had taken over the Ga Matse Palace, and while efforts were underway to get them away from the palace, another opposing faction also attacked them, and a clash ensued between the two factions leading to some of them sustaining some minor injuries. However, we have taken over the control of the place.”

“…So for now, the police have taken control of the security of the Ga Mantse until further notice. We are also engaging the authorities of the palace in a dialogue, and also to find out what led to the taking over of the Ga Mantse palace,” Effia Tenge added.
