{"id":287907,"date":"2017-01-25T07:36:12","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T07:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=287907"},"modified":"2017-01-25T07:36:12","modified_gmt":"2017-01-25T07:36:12","slug":"yellow-fever-cases-rise-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2017\/01\/yellow-fever-cases-rise-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Yellow fever cases rise in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Health officials in Brazil say there has been a sharp rise in the cases of yellow fever in the country.<\/p>\n<p>They said there had been 63 confirmed cases of the mosquito-borne illness so far this year, up from seven in the whole of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the cases have been in rural areas of Minas Gerais state, a Ministry of Health statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The government has sent two million doses of yellow fever vaccines to the state.<\/p>\n<p>The governor of Minas Gerais has declared a 180-day state of emergency.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What is yellow fever?<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Difficult to diagnose and often confused with other diseases or fevers<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Most people recover after the first phase of infection that usually involves fever, muscle and back pain, headache, shivers, loss of appetite, and nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">About 15% of people face a second, more serious phase involving high fever, jaundice, bleeding and deteriorating kidney function<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Half of those who enter the &#8220;toxic&#8221; phase usually die within 10 to 14 days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/csr\/disease\/yellowfev\/en\/\">WHO<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<p>Of the 63 confirmed cases in Brazil, 35 have proved fatal, Brazilian Health Ministry figures show.<\/p>\n<p>That is the highest number of deaths since at least 2008, the year to which Ministry of Health records date back.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been three confirmed cases in Sao Paulo, Brazil&#8217;s most populous state, and one each in Espiritu Santo and Bahia, which both neighbour Minas.<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear what has caused the rise in cases.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health officials in Brazil say there has been a sharp rise in the cases of yellow fever in the country.
