<\/p>\nA delegation of professors and students\u00a0from the College of New Jersey, (TCNJ) USA, is in Ghana conducting assessments for children with intellectual disabilities including Autism, and offering training to parents, teachers and caregivers on how to effectively take care of children with special needs.<\/p>\n
The trip by this Special Education group forms part of a study abroad program aimed at broadening their worldview on their chosen fields of study.<\/p>\n

The training program coordinated\u00a0by The Beyond Aid Project in partnership with Haven International Centre for Special Education is to empower teachers and parents and share knowledge on best practices.<\/p>\n
Robert Kumapley, a co-founder of\u00a0Haven International indicated\u00a0the objective\u00a0 is not just to\u00a0 empower\u00a0 the teachers in developing new skills, but to\u00a0\u00a0 also to help raise\u00a0 awareness\u00a0 on\u00a0 autism and other conditions .<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is also to equip parents with needed skills to actively participate in the implementation of recommended therapies outside the classroom environment,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The facilitator of\u00a0the training sessions,\u00a0\u00a0 Professor Jerry .G. Petroff,\u00a0 \u00a0a Language and Communication Specialist\u00a0from\u00a0New Jersey, expressed how excited he is to help children\u00a0with special needs in Ghana.<\/p>\n
He recommended \u00a0 that the best way to assist such children is to identify developmental delays and conditions at early stages.\u00a0 This, he said will help in identifying the needed environment for the children.\u00a0 Fathers were encouraged not to leave the upbringing children with special needs in the hands\u00a0of just the mothers.<\/p>\n
Some participants, especially parents who benefited from the training were grateful to the organizers for the opportunity given them to learn more about their children\u2019s conditions.<\/p>\n

Another group led by Prof Michele Naples\u00a0from the School of Business at TCNJ visited Enablis Ghana, the African Women’s Development Fund, and the Gender Desk of the Trade Union to interact with them and learn\u00a0about women’s rights in the workplace.<\/p>\n
Whilst here, they are providing technical support to The Beyond Aid Project, a Social\u00a0Enterprise on strategies to enhance\u00a0the\u00a0visibility of the work they do. They also provided suggestions on product lines that will\u00a0do well in the\u00a0US.<\/p>\n
Located off the Spintex Road in Accra, Haven International promotes the interest of people with autism and other intellectual disabilities in Ghana. Haven provides a one stop shop support to children and parents who need information on autism and other intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n
