Labour Analyst, Austin Gammey has described as fair, the new national daily minimum wage which takes effect this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is fair because minimum means minimum but if the employer thinks they can do a top up on the salaries of their workers then they should do so , otherwise you have a minimum threshold that you cannot go beyond it so it\u2019s just a minimum,\u201d Mr Gammey said.<\/p>\n
Government in September 2016 announced a 10 percent increase in the national daily minimum wage.<\/p>\n
The figure has since increased from 8 cedis to 8 cedis 80 pesewas.<\/p>\n
However commenting on the matter Austin Gammey told Citi Business News the amount is realistic.<\/p>\n
\u201c Therefore it is not compulsory for employees to pay only the minimum wage but if you are unable to \u00a0pay anything \u00a0at all because of your operational cost and labor cost then you can pay only the minimum that\u2019s why it\u2019s called minimum wage it\u2019s a national daily minimum wage,\u2019\u2019Mr\u00a0 Gammey added.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the Trades Union Congress (TUC) wants the inspectorate division of the employment ministry to be strict in enforcing compliance with the new national daily minimum wage.<\/p>\n
The General Secretary of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah in an interview with Citi Business News<\/strong> explained the impact will be more relevant if compliance is high.<\/p>\n “The most important thing is the compliance; even if it\u2019s not as high as we want it to be, that we get every employer to pay the minimum wage and pay it on time, it makes a huge difference,” he said.<\/p>\n The TUC General Secretary added, \u201cNo matter how small, no matter how large, if the compliance rate is low then fewer people benefit.
