The National Chairman of Fulani’s in Ghana, Alhaji Mohammed Bingle has condemned the Jirapa District Assembly’s plans of tagging Fulani herdsmen in the Municipality.

This follows an announcement by the Jirapa District Chief Executive (DCE), Madam Vivien-Nelly Kunko, and chiefs and opinion leaders in the district that Fulani herdsmen living in the District will register formally and given tags for easy identification.

But in an interview with Citi News, Alhaji Bingle opined that the move by the Assembly is both discriminatory and dehumanizing.

According to him, for a select few to wear tags for purposes of identification is unfair adding that “people can be issued with identity cards, but it should be in their pockets but to hang it on their neck and roaming about is not right.”

He however clarified he is not against identification as it serves great purposes in cases of emergencies “but that identity card should not be in the form of tags.”

Some communities across the country with Fulani residents have complained about the activities of the Fulani herdsmen.

In some cases, there have been reports of outbreak of violence between indigenes and the Fulani herdsmen resulting.

Local indigenes claim that the herdsmen rape their women while their cattle destroy the produce in the farms and have called on government and other relevant authorities to relocate these Fulani herdsmen.

A survey undertaken by the Ghana Network for Peace Building (GHANEP) asserted that the Fulani Herdsmen are a threat to national security.
