Inadequate technical staff is a major setback facing District Assemblies in their bid to undertake the street naming and property addressing exercise in the Upper West Region.<\/p>\n
President John Dramani Mahama in April 2013 tasked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to embark on the Street Naming and Property Addressing System and complete it by September 2014.<\/p>\n
As part of measures to implement the project, all the 11 assemblies in the Upper West region have constituted District Implementation Teams\u00a0have equipment from the Ministry of Local Government.<\/p>\n
But the lack of personnel with the requisite knowledge in the exercise to lead the teams is drawing back the progress of work on the project in the assemblies.<\/p>\n
The outgoing Upper West Regional Minister, Bede Angwataazuma Ziedeng, disclosed these at a durbar organized by the Wa Municipal Assembly to solicit views from the public on names to consider in naming streets in the Wa municipality and to bring the concept of the exercise close to the people.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cI am aware of the serious challenge of inadequate technical personnel to guide the districts to undertake the exercise. I therefore want to urge the Town and Country Planning Department who are the lead agency in this exercise to redouble their efforts and detail the right personnel to all the districts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Ziedeng advised the Wa municipal assembly to share their experiences with the rest of the districts in the region and warned that the regional coordinating council will descend heavily on Assemblies that will not meet the September 2014 presidential deadline.<\/p>\n
Over 500 streets and properties are earmarked to be named in the Wa municipality.<\/p>\n
