{"id":276201,"date":"2016-12-12T12:21:49","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T12:21:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=276201"},"modified":"2016-12-12T12:21:49","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T12:21:49","slug":"gambia-election-chief-stand-by-yahya-jammeh-defeat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/12\/gambia-election-chief-stand-by-yahya-jammeh-defeat\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambia election chief stand by Yahya Jammeh defeat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The Gambia&#8217;s elections commission head has dismissed President Yahya Jammeh&#8217;s call to annul the election he was declared to have lost.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jammeh said on state television on Saturday that he rejected the result and his party announced they will file a petition to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Elections head Alieu Momarr Njai told Reuters that &#8220;if it goes to court, we can prove every vote cast&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Gambians use marbles instead of ballot papers to cast votes.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Africa Live: Updates on this and other stories<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">From security guard to president<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">The man in charge for 22 years<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Six reasons why Jammeh lost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In his TV appearance, Mr Jammeh announced his &#8220;total rejection of the election result&#8230; thereby annulling the election&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8220;we will go back to the polls because I want to make sure every Gambian has voted&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was preparing a petition &#8220;against the flawed decision of the Independent Elections Commission&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Njai told Reuters: &#8220;The election results were correct, nothing will change that&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adding errors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the electoral commission, as a result of the vote on 1 December:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Adama Barrow won 222,708 votes (43.3%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">President Jammeh took 208,487 (39.6%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A third-party candidate, Mama Kandeh, won 89,768 (17.1%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The results were revised by the country&#8217;s electoral commission on 5 December, when it emerged that the ballots for one area were added incorrectly, swelling Mr Barrow&#8217;s vote.<\/p>\n<p>The error, which also added votes to the other candidates, &#8220;has not changed the status quo&#8221; of the result, the commission said.<\/p>\n<p>However, it narrowed Mr Barrow&#8217;s margin of victory from 9% to 4%.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jammeh, who has been in power in The Gambia for 22 years, originally conceded victory to Mr Barrow, who used to be a security guard in chain store Argos in London.<\/p>\n<p>He was even filmed telephoning Mr Barrow saying &#8220;you are the elected president of Gambia and I wish you all the best&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last week a leading member of the coalition that defeated Mr Jammeh told the UK&#8217;s The Guardian newspaper that President Jammeh would be prosecuted for alleged crimes committed during his rule.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Jammeh&#8217;s Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction party announced, late on Saturday, that a petition would be filed to The Gambia&#8217;s Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>President-elect Barrow said on Sunday that he feared for his safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gambia&#8217;s elections commission head has dismissed President Yahya Jammeh&#8217;s call to annul the election he was declared to have lost.
