An anti-corruption agency called the Ghana Youth Integrity Campaign, (GYIC) has advocated the speedy implementation of the whistleblowers Act.<\/p>\n
The GYIC\u2019s Programs Director, Kadri Abdul Rauf made the call in Tamale, at a three-day workshop which drew participants from youth clubs, unions and associations in the three regions of the north.<\/p>\n
He described as totally unacceptable, further delay in passing the whistle blowers Act into law, at a time studies have proven that corruption was pervasive in Ghana.<\/p>\n
He posited, \u201cIn Ghana, corruption remains a huge impediment to the achievement of set development goals and objectives, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDG\u2019s): the multi-faceted nature of the problem of corruption requires a multi-faceted response that will involve multiple stakeholders including the younger generation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kadri Abdul Rauf explained that among other interventions, the project sought to enhance the capacity of the youth of Northern Ghana on integrity and whistleblowing mechanisms.<\/p>\n
The Country Director of sponsors of the project, Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), Demian Regehr, said his outfit\u2019s decision to finance the project was informed by the Ghana Youth Integrity Campaign\u2019s determination to galvanize the younger generation in Northern Ghana to uproot corruption as a means of promoting good governance.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is quite obvious why we are supporting today\u2019s\u00a0 workshop: enabling you Ghana\u2019s young generation, the future leaders of the country to better indentify, combat and prevent corruption which will directly support a stronger sense for democracy and the rule of law in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Hanns encouraged the participants saying, \u201cWhen corruption becomes part of a society, the only way to effectively combat it is to change the general attitude towards corruption prevailing in society itself and that is where you all come into play: you are the ones who are going to shape the future environment of Ghanaian society through interactions in your various micro environments all together forming the macro picture of tomorrow\u2019s Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n
As a German government\u2019s financed political foundation headquartered in Ouagadougou, he said the HSF was committed to sponsoring viable projects targeted at promoting good governance in about 80 countries worldwide.<\/p>\n
Facilitators of the workshop including Executive Director of Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Mrs. Linda Ofori Kwafo reoriented the psyche of the participants on how to fight corruption in their localities.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Kwafo who did a presentation on the concept and dynamics of corruption said corruption should not be seen as a perception but a reality hampering Ghana\u2019s socio-economic development at all levels.<\/p>\n
She challenged duty bearers especially government functionaries to demonstrate their zeal to eradicate corruption in the Ghanaian society by punishing individuals and organizations who have been indicted for corrupt practices.<\/p>\n
The participants are expected to act as critical mass of youth anti corruption Ambassadors in their respective localities.<\/p>\n
As part of their modus operandi, they will be using the social media as the fastest campaign platform to report cases of corruption within their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n
