{"id":272193,"date":"2016-11-28T07:24:59","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T07:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/?p=272193"},"modified":"2016-11-28T07:24:59","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T07:24:59","slug":"ngos-lead-fight-against-rampant-bushfires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/11\/ngos-lead-fight-against-rampant-bushfires\/","title":{"rendered":"NGOs lead fight against rampant bushfires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Feed the Future Agricultural Development and Value Chain Enhancement (ADVANCE) program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has collaborated with the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to launch an \u201canti-bushfire\u201d campaign in the Nanumba North, Tolon and Gushegu districts of the Northern Region.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-272208\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Bush-fires-5.jpg\" alt=\"bush-fires-5\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The event was to draw the public\u2019s attention to the devastating effects of bushfires and it effects on food production.<\/p>\n<p>Chiefs, opinion leaders, officials from the District Assembly, MoFA, Ghana National Fire Service, farmers, community members and the media renewed their commitment to stop bushfires in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-272207\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Bush-fires-4.jpg\" alt=\"bush-fires-4\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ADVANCE Regional Coordinator for Tamale, Francis Essuman, indicated that the project, which has already been rolled out is to help conserve the fertility of soils for increased food production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough Feed the Future, the U.S. government\u2019s global hunger and food security initiative, the ADVANCE project works to boost agricultural productivity and increase the competitiveness of maize, rice, and soybean value chains in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-272206\" src=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Bush-fires-3.jpg\" alt=\"bush-fires-3\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cADVANCE promotes climate-smart agriculture to help farmers withstand climate change and increase their yields. One strategy is preventing bushfires by training smallholder farmers in effective agronomic practices. In the coming months, prior to the onset of Ghana\u2019s dry season, ADVANCE will engage the media and appropriate and many other actors in the agricultural value chain to lead the campaign against bushfires,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Feed the Future is the U.S. government\u2019s global hunger and food security initiative.
