The Police Service has rejected accusations that it is conniving with the Electoral Commission (EC) to unlawfully add the names of some police recruits to the special voters’ list.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Citi News<\/strong> intercepted a document suggesting that the Ghana Police Service in collaboration with the Electoral Commission (EC), have embarked on an exercise to add the names of more Police officers and recruits to the special voters\u2019 list.<\/p>\n [contextly_sidebar id=”T2td3lpo4J0rYXIpxPRcJk6mla4WKN6k”]Although the exercise for the creation of the special voters list ended on October 28; 42 clear days ahead of the December election as stipulated by law, the latest directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) instructed the various levels of Commands in the Service to liaise with EC officials to add more names to the list.<\/p>\n The memo, which was written by the Director General of Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu on behalf of the IGP, was in two parts.<\/p>\n The first part instructed all Divisional Commanders, all Regional Commanders, and all Commanders in charge of Police training schools to submit the names of Police officers whose names are not on the special voters\u2019 register.<\/p>\n The final part, directed the aforementioned commanders, especially the commanders of the Police Training Schools, to make sure that all recruits have their names on the special voters\u2019 list.<\/p>\n The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the People\u2019s National Convention (PNC) have since been challenging the move, accusing the Electoral Commission of conniving with the Police to illegally add the names, less than 42 days as required by law.<\/p>\n But the Director General of Operations of the Police COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu in a rebuttal denied these claims, saying \u201cit is not true that we are adding new names.\u201d<\/p>\n He further added that all the recruits had already “registered and are valid voters and they have the opportunity to vote only once.”<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n By: Marian Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana
