Others burned orange-haired effigies of the businessman.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump will become the 45th US president after securing a surprise victory over Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>He is due to meet current White House incumbent Barack Obama for talks aimed at ensuring a smooth transition.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Obama &#8211; who had branded Mr Trump &#8220;unfit&#8221; for office and campaigned against him &#8211; urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday&#8217;s election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Defeated Mrs Clinton also told supporters Mr Trump had to be given a &#8220;chance to lead&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/B76D\/production\/_92375964_036316502-1.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters carry a Trump effigy in Los Angeles\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>In Los Angeles protesters built an effigy resembling Mr Trump&#8230;<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Despite their calls, protesters gathered in several cities across the country.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In New York, thousands marched on Trump Tower, attacking Mr Trump&#8217;s policies on immigration, gay rights and reproductive rights. Fifteen people were arrested, <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/10\/us\/trump-election-protests.html?action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=span-abc-region&amp;region=span-abc-region&amp;WT.nav=span-abc-region&amp;_r=0\">the New York Times reported.<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Protests were largely peaceful but in Oakland, California, some demonstrators smashed shop windows and threw missiles at riot police, who reportedly responded with tear gas<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A mass anti-Trump rally shut down the key 101 freeway in Los Angeles<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Chicago, crowds <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/breaking\/ct-trump-hotel-protest-chicago-20161109-story.html\">blocked the entrance to Trump Tower<\/a>, chanting: &#8220;No Trump, No KKK, No Fascists USA&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Portland, Oregon, demonstrators temporarily closed an interstate highway<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In Washington DC, protesters held a candlelit vigil. Organiser Ben Wikler told the crowd: &#8220;We are here because in these darkest moments, we are not alone&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Demonstrations also took place in Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle and San Francisco, among other cities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/0DE5\/production\/_92375530_mediaitem92375529.jpg\" alt=\"An anti-Trump protest in Chicago\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Most of the rallies were peaceful<\/span><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/12397\/production\/_92374647_mediaitem92374646.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters in Chicago\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Tower in Chicago also saw demonstrations<\/span><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/AA25\/production\/_92375534_mediaitem92375533.jpg\" alt=\"demonstrator in san francisco\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/>Mr Trump&#8217;s election has left many people stunned<\/span><\/figure>\n<p>In his victory speech in the early hours of Wednesday, Mr Trump vowed to &#8220;bind the wounds of division&#8221;, after an acrimonious election contest, and to be &#8220;president for all Americans&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>White House spokesman Josh Earnest has insisted Mr Obama will be sincere about ensuring a smooth handover when he meets Mr Trump, although he added: &#8220;I&#8217;m not saying it&#8217;s going to be an easy meeting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The president-elect will be accompanied to the White House on Thursday morning (1600 GMT) by his wife, Melania, who will have a meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House residence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"media-player-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"media-player-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mr Obama, who congratulated his successor in a phone call in the early hours of Wednesday, said it was &#8220;no secret&#8221; that he and Mr Trump had pretty significant differences.<\/p>\n<p>But he added that &#8220;we all want what&#8217;s best for this country&#8221; and he was &#8220;heartened&#8221; by what he heard in Mr Trump&#8217;s remarks the night before.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump&#8217;s transition team for the 10-week period until inauguration will be led by Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-with-caption\">\n<div class=\"media-player-wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The president-elect, who has never held elected office, has said his immediate priorities will be restoring the country&#8217;s infrastructure and doubling its economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said: &#8220;Donald Trump is taking this very seriously,&#8221; adding that the business mogul&#8217;s deal-making ability would enable him to quickly &#8220;make things happen for the American people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of several US cities to protest against the election of Donald Trump.
